What makes Jesus so 'unique' when many came before him?

It is quite possible that the Jesus myths, as recorded in the gospels, are the result of the early Christians attempting to create meaning from the death of their spiritual leader. It is plausible that characteristics found in other stories being translated in 1st century Judea were incorporated into the Jesus stories.
